FAQs

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic philosophy begins with the principle that the human organism has an innate power to maintain its own health.  The art of Chiropractic focuses on adjustments to correct spinal malfunctions, called Chiropractic Vertebral Subluxations, in order to remove interference from the nervous system.

Science has found that the nervous system controls all other organs and tissues of the body.  A nervous system functioning at its best  facilitates the body's ability to cope with disability and disease.

Our Approach

The Chiropractic approach to health care is holistic, stressing the patient's overall well being.  It recognizes that many factors affect health, including exercise, diet, rest, environment and heredity.  Chiropractic focuses on maintaining optimal health naturally so that the body is better able to resist disease, rather than simply treating the symptoms of disease.

Chiropractors use natural, drugless, non-surgical health care and rely on the body's inherent recuperative abilities.  This unique health care approach views the body as having an innate, natural ability to adapt to changes in its internal and external environments and maintain itself in a state of health.

Traditional medicine and its allied health fields typically view the body from a more mechanistic standpoint — as a system of parts that can be altered through outside interventions to produce certain results. Both approaches have important roles to play, but they are fundamentally different.

Chiropractors focus on the nervous system (the brain and spinal cord) which manages the body’s vast chemical interactions to help ensure proper function.  The brain sends messages through the spinal cord across a huge network of spinal nerves to deliver information to every cell, organ and system of the body.  This information system coordinates the myriad chemical reactions that dictate how well you sleep, how food is digested, your ability to concentrate, physical coordination, the capabilities of the immune system and all aspects of body function.

What techniques are used?

There are many techniques available.  It is not possible to go into them all here.  Sufficed to say that the techniques that are employed are tailored to the individual.  Adjustments that we would
use on a grown adult would be inappropriate on a baby or an elderly woman.  The actual technique that is used is not important; it is the intent that makes the adjustment; the philosophy of Chiropractic.

As an analogy...
Give a chippy and a master craftsman a piece of wood and a chisel you will get two outcomes.   A half lap joint and a carving.  same materials and tools, different intent.

How long does care take?

This will vary from individual to individual depending on severity, chronicity, age, and lifestyle.  Each individual is different so to predict is impossible.  It is easier to describe the stages of healing that we go through.

Initial - This is where we deal with the presenting imbalances, whatever they may be.  This phase usually requires a number of visits over a short period of time to help to support the body during the early stages of healing.

Rehabilitation - Less adjustments are needed as the body moves closer to its optimum function.  Adjustments at this stage are more akin to nudges to keep the process on course

Wellness - It is impossible to cure "conditions" as most are as a result of our environment; to which we have to return.  Many patients chose some form of ongoing care to help to "fine tune" our nervous system and to help to prevent this gradual deterioration.

Who can be adjusted?

Our youngest patients have been hours old (Richard Southam's were minutes!), our oldest patients have been in their 90's.

Our Philosophy: "if you have a spine, a nervous system and are alive" we can adjust you!

Although not recognised by the General Chiropractic Council, it is also possible to adjust animals.  Indeed there are a good number of "manipulative therapists" who do solely animal work.  They have a nervous system like you and I.  Why should they not receive the same benefit of having it functioning in it's optimal state?

Can I get insurance to cover the care?

Yes you can.  We are BUPA, PPP, HSA, and Norwich Union registered.

There are oher insurance groups out there with whom we are not yet registered.  If you are unsure please contact us and we will check.

Some insurance companies require a referral from a GP.  Others do not.  If you talk to your insurer they will be able to tell you what their requirements are.
